I was standing in my kitchen the other morning, staring at a sink full of dishes while mentally calculating whether we could afford both groceries AND that vehicle repair this week. Sound familiar?

That’s when it hit me—I was doing it again. Letting the weight of everything crush the peace right out of my day before it even started.

If you’re reading this while your toddler tugs on your leg and you’re mentally running through your never-ending farm to-do list, I see you. The financial pressure, the equipment that breaks at the worst possible moment, the grocery budget that never seems to stretch far enough—it’s a lot.

But here’s what I’ve learned: finding calm on the farm isn’t about having a perfect system or a bigger bank account. It’s about tending to your peace the same way you tend to your garden—a little bit, every single day.

Start Small: Just Like Planting Seeds

You know how you don’t plant your entire garden in one day? Same goes for building calm into your life. Start with just five minutes of prayer or quiet reflection in the morning. I like to sit on my porch with my coffee, before the kids wake up, and just talk to God about the day ahead.

I like to sit on my patio with my coffee, before the kids wake up, and just talk to God about the day ahead.

It’s not about having some elaborate prayer routine—it’s about grounding yourself in His strength before the chaos begins. Think of it as watering your spirit before you water anything else.

Protect Your Time Like You Protect Your Crops

Remember how you learned to fence off your garden to keep the chickens out? Your time needs the same protection.

I used to feel guilty about taking even 30 minutes for myself. But then I realized—when I’m running on empty, everyone suffers. Now I schedule my “quiet time” just like I schedule feeding time. The kids know that after lunch, we all have quiet time. They can read, nap, or play quietly in their rooms while I breathe.

This isn’t selfish—it’s smart farming. You can’t pour from an empty bucket.

Choose Your Battles (And Let Some Weeds Grow)

Here’s something that might surprise you: not everything on your to-do list actually matters today. I learned this the hard way when I was trying to keep a spotless house, perfect garden, profitable farm, AND happy family all at once.

Now I ask myself: “If I only got three things done today, what would move the needle most?” Sometimes that’s spending extra time with the kids instead of deep-cleaning the house. Sometimes it’s focusing on the farm tasks that actually generate income instead of the ones that just look productive.

Give yourself permission to let some things slide. The dust will wait—your peace won’t.

Celebrate the Small Wins

At the end of each day, I write down three things that went right or that I’m grateful for. Not the big victories (though those count too), but the small ones:

  • We all ate dinner together
  • The chickens are healthy
  • I had a good conversation with my husband
  • Nobody had a meltdown at the grocery store

When you’re carrying the weight of keeping a farm and family afloat, these moments matter more than you realize. They’re proof that you’re not just surviving—you’re actually doing a lot of things right.

Find Your People

The loneliness of farm life is real, especially when you’re dealing with financial pressure that feels like it might crush you. But you’re not meant to carry this alone.

Whether it’s joining a group like our Thriving Through Farm Life Support Group on Facebook, texting with another farm wife who gets it, or just being honest with your husband about how you’re really feeling—connection is medicine for the overwhelmed heart.

The Truth About Finding Calm

Here’s what I wish someone had told me when I was drowning in debt and doubt: calm isn’t something you find once and keep forever. It’s something you choose, again and again, even when (especially when) everything feels uncertain.

Some days you’ll nail it. Other days you’ll lose your peace before lunch and have to start over. Both are normal. Both are part of the journey.

You’re not failing, friend. You’re learning to grow something beautiful in the middle of hard ground. And that takes time, patience, and a whole lot of grace—for your farm, your family, and yourself.

Take a deep breath. You’re doing better than you think.

Here’s to finding calm in the chaos,

Cassandra

As I’ve grown as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So, I MADE MY OWN. You can look at it on the link below and buy it on Amazon.
