This summer, I found myself praying over a broken water line at 6 AM while my toddler cried for breakfast and the chickens escaped their coop. Sound familiar?

As farm wives, we’re constantly juggling—one minute we’re balancing the books, the next we’re nursing a sick calf. In between, we’re trying to raise children who know God in a world that feels increasingly chaotic.

But here’s what I’ve learned: our kids don’t need perfect devotional time. They need to see authentic faith in action.

The Silent Struggle Every Farm Wife Knows

We pray while we’re doing dishes, whisper “Help me, Lord” while chasing escaped goats, and find ourselves in deep conversation with God during the 4 AM feeding routine.

The problem? Our children rarely see these sacred moments.

They see the stress when the tractor breaks down right before harvest. They feel the tension when we’re choosing between groceries and farm supplies. But do they see where we find our strength?

Why This Matters More Than You Think

I used to think my silent faith was enough—that somehow my children would just absorb my beliefs through osmosis. Then my daughter asked me, “Mom, do you really believe God cares about our farm?”

That question stopped me cold. Here I was, praying constantly about our farm struggles, but my daughter had never seen me turn to God with our family’s challenges.

Our children are watching. And what they see shapes who they become.

4 Simple Ways to Show Your Kids Where Real Help Comes From

You don’t need an hour-long Bible study or perfect quiet time. You need authentic moments that fit your real life:

1. Pray Out Loud (Even When It Feels Awkward)

Next time you’re worried about the weather forecast or dealing with equipment failure, say your prayer out loud: “Lord, we need Your help with this situation. We trust You to provide.”

Your kids need to hear you talking to God about real problems—not just dinner prayers.

2. Turn Chore Time into Story Time

While you’re feeding animals or working in the garden, share Bible stories that connect to what you’re doing. Talk about how God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness while you’re discussing your own provision concerns.

3. Use a Family Devotional That Actually Works for Busy Families

I’ve tried countless devotionals that were too long, too complicated, or just didn’t speak to our farm life reality. That’s why I love Not Consumed family devotionals – they’re designed for real families with real time constraints. Five minutes. Real topics. And they actually address the kind of anxiety and overwhelm we face daily.

4. Create “God Moments” Throughout Your Day

When something good happens—a successful harvest, a healthy birth, equipment that starts when it should—stop and acknowledge God’s goodness out loud. “Look how God provided!” becomes a natural response that your children will remember.

The Truth About Raising Kids with Faith on the Farm

Here’s what I wish someone had told me earlier: your children don’t need you to have it all figured out spiritually. They need to see you turning to God when life gets messy.

The farm life gives us countless opportunities to demonstrate dependence on God—we just need to be intentional about making those moments visible to our kids.

When storms threaten crops, when animals get sick, when finances are tight—these aren’t interruptions to your faith journey. They’re the perfect classroom for teaching your children that God is trustworthy, even when circumstances aren’t.

Start Small, Stay Consistent

This week, pick just one thing:

  • Pray out loud when you’re concerned about something farm-related
  • Share one Bible story while you’re doing evening chores
  • Try a simple family devotional that fits your schedule (Not Consumed offers a free sample if you want to test it out)
  • Point out one way you saw God’s provision in your day

Remember, friend—you’re not raising perfect children. You’re raising resilient ones who know where to turn when life gets hard.

And on a farm, that lesson is worth more than any crop you could ever harvest.
