There is a particular kind of tired that hits farm wives and busy moms in the evening — the kind where your body is completely done but your brain is still running the to-do list from three days ago. You finally get horizontal and suddenly you’re mentally replaying that email you forgot to send, whether the hose shut off, and approximately seventeen other things that cannot be fixed at 11 p.m.
Sound familiar?
Sleep struggles are one of those things nobody talks about much, but almost everyone deals with. The good news is that there are some simple, natural things you can do to help your body and brain actually wind down at the end of the day. These are the eight tips I come back to again and again when sleep feels like a battle I’m losing.
1. Protect a Bedtime Routine — Even a Loose One
Routine gets talked about a lot when it comes to kids, but adults need it just as much. Your body and brain are looking for signals that it’s time to slow down and prepare for sleep. A consistent evening routine — even a simple, flexible one — gives them those cues.
Life with livestock, kids, and a working farm means your evenings are rarely predictable. That’s okay. Even a loose structure helps. Think of it less as a rigid schedule and more as a series of wind-down signals you give yourself when you can.
2. Put the Devices Down Earlier
Blue light from phones, tablets, and computers tells your brain to wake up — the same way daylight does. When you’re scrolling right up until you close your eyes, you’re essentially asking your brain to power down mid-sentence. It doesn’t work.
Something that genuinely shifted things for me: I started keeping my phone out of the bedroom entirely. Even on Do Not Disturb, it was pulling my attention. I’d check one thing, remember another thing, and suddenly it was an hour later. Moving it out of the room removed the temptation and gave my brain permission to actually stop.
3. Sip a Calming Herbal Tea
When you’re having a hard time winding down, a warm cup of chamomile, lavender, or valerian tea can help calm both your mind and your body. There’s something about the ritual of making and holding a warm mug that signals slowdown all on its own — and all three herbs have a long history of supporting relaxation before sleep.
If you’d rather skip the guesswork and reach for a blend that’s already done right, Herb Co is a solid source for quality herbal teas. My personal favorite blends come from Wild Capri — they make it easy to just grab something that works without having to think too hard at the end of a long day.
4. Try an Herbal Tincture for Stress Support
If stress or anxiety is the thing keeping your brain spinning at bedtime, an herbal tincture might be exactly what your body needs. Unlike a pill you swallow and forget about, tinctures absorb quickly and tend to work with your body in a gentler, more targeted way.
This is where I point you to Roots Apothecary — a source I genuinely trust for quality herbal products. They carry tincture blends specifically formulated for stress and sleep support, made with ingredients that have real roots in herbal tradition. The beauty of an herbal tincture is that it meets your body where it is — calming the nervous system without knocking you out or leaving you groggy in the morning. If you’ve been relying on willpower alone to wind down from a hard day, this is worth trying.
5. Cool Down the Room
Your body temperature naturally drops at night, and a cooler room helps signal to your body that it’s time for sleep. This is one of the simplest, most no-cost adjustments you can make, and it’s backed by a lot of research.
On the farm in the summer, this isn’t always easy — but even running a fan or cracking a window can help. In the colder months, I love cooling the room down and piling on the quilts for that wrapped-in warmth feeling without trapping heat.
6. Consider a Weighted Blanket
There’s a reason weighted blankets feel like being hugged — and for a lot of people, that pressure genuinely helps calm the nervous system enough to fall asleep. If you tend to feel restless or anxious at bedtime, this is worth trying. You can even find options with cooling cells built in so you get the weight without overheating.
7. Get Your Pillow Right
This one sounds basic, but a properly fitted pillow is close to essential for quality sleep. When your neck and spine are aligned correctly through the night, you wake up without the stiff neck, sore shoulders, and achy joints that make mornings harder than they need to be. If you’re consistently waking up stiff or unrested, your pillow situation is worth a second look.
8. Support Your Sleep with MAKE Wellness Restore Peptide
My final tip is one I’ve been really loving lately — and it’s a little different from anything else on this list.
MAKE Wellness makes a Restore Peptide that supports your body’s natural recovery and rest processes overnight. Peptides work at a cellular level, giving your body the signals it needs to do the repair and restoration work that happens during deep sleep. It’s the kind of support that works with your body’s own rhythms rather than overriding them.
What I appreciate about MAKE Wellness is that they take the science seriously without making it complicated for the rest of us. If you’ve been waking up feeling like you didn’t actually rest — even when you got enough hours — this is worth looking into.
You can check out the Restore Peptide and everything else they offer at makewellness.com/524452.
Sleep is one of those things that affects everything else — your patience, your decision-making, your energy for the people and the work you care about most. Taking care of it isn’t a luxury. It’s stewardship of the body you’ve been given to do the things you’re here to do.
Start with one or two of these and see how your body responds. You don’t have to overhaul everything tonight.
You’re not behind — you’re just in a different season. And this season can include rest.
Which of these have you tried? Drop a comment and let me know what’s worked for you — I’d love to hear.
As I’ve grown as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So, I MADE MY OWN. You can look at it on the link below and buy it on Amazon.
