I did not start my journey intending to dive into the homesteading lifestyle. I thought that was 40+ acres of grass to run my animals on. I had 3.4 acres to work with in the middle of crop country. I just wanted to be able to feed my family.
I grew up on the farm and remember my grandma growing a beautiful garden and my mom canning every summer. My mom, try as she may, has never had a green thumb. When I was first married, I didn’t even grow a garden for the first couple years. We were both still in college and traveling back and forth between school and his family farm. We had my 2 horses, 1 dog, and jobs. I was working 45 minutes away from home, while he worked on the family farm.
When we moved home in 2015, he grew the first garden. A very rough looking sweetcorn patch. I had some herbs in pots up by the house. The following year, we got a fence up, because of rabbits, and I had a small garden, of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. The things I remember my mom trying to grow.
We actually debated the size of the garden. I wanted it smaller and a bigger fire pit area, he thought it should be bigger. Fun fact, he was right. 2-3 years later, my oldest daughter and I were moving the fire pit brick by brick and making the garden bigger.
In 2019 I was pregnant with my son and looking at the cost of what daycare for 2 would cost. I was also moving into a season where I no longer liked being away from my family so much. I loved my job but seeing my child for 3-4 hours every weekday wasn’t cutting it. The only problem was, my job was providing insurance, and groceries. We were using my husband’s income for savings and home improvements.
No matter how I ran the numbers, I couldn’t continue to work and still buy gas to get there and groceries to feed my family. I ran the numbers with just my husband’s income, what insurance options we found, and no daycare, it was going to be tight, but do able. I told my boss I wouldn’t be back after I had my son.
Now how to make the grocery bill smaller. Then I remembered my grandma’s garden and stories of great grandma’s garden. They grew everything! So, I dug in over winter. Looked at what my family was eating vegetable wise and figured out how to grow it. Every year my garden has expanded in space and variety.
I learned how to preserve what I grew and how to cook with whole food ingredients, eliminating all the boxed dinners. 2019 also brought a new frontiers of food allergies and learning to cook without gluten and dairy.
We were fortunate to be able to get ½ a beef every year with my husband’s job. 2020 I bought my first chickens. 2021 brought guineas, ducks, and turkeys. 2022 came the geese and honeybees. In 2022 I also learned how to butcher chickens.
I started a poly culture orchard in 2021 as well, to raise some of our own fruit as well. The advantage of the poly culture orchard is once it is established, it takes care of itself with very little maintenance and care.
This year, 2023, we added our milk cow and a small greenhouse to learn in.
Next year, 2024, were planning on adding pigs.
Today, we raise 95% of our own protein and 70% of our own vegetables. The orchard is still maturing but will one day produce 50% of our fruits.
Our family is now 5 strong. I spend maybe $300/month on groceries. Some months we trade for groceries. Yes, it would be nice to spend more on groceries, but we’re not able to yet. However, we eat well and won’t starve either.
I started with a simple garden but grew as I had the capacity and the need for another food category. I started small and added as I got comfortable with what was already here.
As I've grown in my journey as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So, I MADE MY OWN. You can look at it on the link below and buy it on amazon below.

We all know life can be crazy and busy. It seems like there's always something to do and not enough time to do it. If you're feeling overwhelmed, it might be time to simplify your life. But what does that mean? And how do you even begin to simplify your life when it feels so complicated?
Here are five tips to help you get started:
Schedule some "me" time: When you're constantly on the go, it's important to schedule some time for yourself. Whether it's a few minutes each day or a couple hours each week, make sure you have some time set aside to relax and do things you enjoy. This will help reduce stress and make it easier to handle everything else on your plate.
Create a routine: Routines can help simplify our lives by giving us a sense of structure. Having a set time for things like meals, exercise, and bedtime can help minimize decision fatigue and make us more productive.
Don't overcommit: It's easy to say yes to everything, but that can quickly lead to burnout. Learn to say no sometimes, and only commit to the things that are truly important to you. This will free up your time and energy for the things that matter most.
Streamline your belongings: Most of us have too much stuff, and all that stuff can be overwhelming. Get rid of anything you don't need or use, and streamline the rest so it's easy to find and put away.
Prioritize your health: When we're busy, our health is often the first thing to suffer. But if we don't take care of ourselves, we'll be even less equipped to handle everything else on our plates. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals, and getting some exercise every day.
Life is always going to be busy, but that doesn't mean we have to feel overwhelmed all the time. By simplifying our lives, we can reduce stress, be more productive, and actually enjoy our free time instead of feeling like we need a vacation from our vacation. Give these tips a try and see how they work for you!

I used to think I was a patient person. I could work with kids of all kinds and never loose my cool. Then I had kids….I am not the most patient with kids who I am around all day every day. But you know who else I’ve never been patient with? Me.
I have understanding and time to let others grow and learn. Myself? I want to be good at whatever the skill is right now. That’s the perfectionist coming out.
Recently, I started feeding cattle on our family operation. Mind, this in not a new job to me. I spent one summer feeding cattle in a large feedlot about 9 years ago. And I was accurate and good at it. Now I am working with older equipment and a wagon instead of a truck, but I started slow! Like it took almost 3 hours to load, mix and feed one load. Yes the wagon takes a long time to mix, but most of that was operator.
As I was slowly loading, careful to not break anything, I caught myself comparing. Comparing to my husband, the normal feeder, and my 9 years ago self. Then I was making excuses, for why I was so slow. And then I stopped myself, after owning to my husband that the load was not very accurate. He told me “it’s ok. It’s your first load”.
I was starting to get frustrated I wasn’t faster. Then it dawned on me. You can’t compare yourself. You must be patient with the learning process. When I first started feeding, I was slow too. And then a week went by and I was faster.
It was a good check for me on what else am I not being patient within the journey? Then it dawned on me I am not patient with myself at all. My gut healing, nope. Want it faster. The growing business? Nope, wanted that going a year ago. The meat business? Nope, want the market, and supply now. My own rediscovering who I am? Absolutely not. I want to know now.
The truth is, if we don’t slow down and be patient with ourselves in the journey, we miss the valuable lessons to be learned. Growth happens in the journey, not the destination.
Stop comparing yourself to others journey. Be patient in your own journey and growth. You will bloom when you are ready and not before. Keep moving forward one step at a time.
As I've grown in my journey as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So I MADE MY OWN. You can take a look at it on the link blow and buy it on amazon below

Time management is huge on a farmstead. As a momma who is managing the home, kids, garden, and animals, you must manage your time to get anything done. I am constantly on the go during the day. Nothing annoys me more than doing nothing when there are things that need to be done. Below are some of my top time management tips for the busy momma.
#1 Know how long tasks will really take. Write it down if you need to. If you have never done the task with kids, take the time it would take you previously and double it. Seriously, that is the best way to guess. Usually, it’s about right too. If you get done sooner, congratulations! You can move to the next task.
#2 Write down what needs to be done. This can be a running list you add as you think about it, or in a planner. My planner has a space for the daily schedule, business must do’s, all the other to do’s, and personal care (yes I have to write down to care for myself).
#3 Prioritize what must be done, and what you would like to get done. Again, this can be written on your list or on your planner. Writing it down helps to quickly decide which task to accomplish.
#4 Schedule time for your ‘work.’ Whether it is a side hustle or tasks you cannot safely do with kids in tow. Assign those tasks to that time slot, then do them when the time comes.
I use these four steps every day. It starts with writing the list down either in the evening or first thing in the morning. One of my work times is first thing in the morning. Having that list ready to go marked with what needs done in the ‘work’ time, helps me to not fumble around and waste the morning.
Over the years, I have gotten a better idea of how long tasks take and can tackle them as time allows. I usually have 15 min or less tasks on my list as well, that I can quickly do as time allows.
As I've grown in my journey as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So I MADE MY OWN. You can take a look at it on the link blow and buy it on amazon below

The line between afternoon and evening is a little blurred on the farm. I define evening as supper and after. So that usually starts around 7pm. Making the evening short and the afternoon time long.
We try to eat supper as a family, sometimes that means taking supper to the field and riding a few rounds with daddy. After supper, the dishes are cleared, and the kitchen cleaned up. The kids usually have a bit of play time with Daddy before bed.
I make sure the kitchen is clean and ready for breakfast the next morning. I have found that keeping the kitchen, my room and bath tidy help me to focus and deal with the rest of the house as needed. Those three rooms are the first and last rooms I see every day.
Kids are headed to bed around 8:30p, with teeth brushing, pjs, and stories. After the baby is asleep, I slip outside to check the animals. The evenings are so cool and is a lovely time to take in the air, relax, and enjoy the stars.
I make sure all the birds are in the hen house, the ducks are notorious for trying to stay out all night. Take a quick walk around making sure all the waters are filled up and picking up any eggs I missed earlier. When there are baby chicks in the nursery, I peek on them and check the temperature in the barn, adjusting the heat lamps as needed.
Once all the animals are settled, I head to the house. It is usually dark by now. Sometimes stopping to gaze at the Milky Way on the way, it is so clear in the summertime here.
After the evening walk though, I tend to plug my phone in and not look at it unless needed. I have found avoiding the screen for an hour before bed helps me fall asleep faster. I clean up whatever didn’t happen before the kid’s bedtime and get ready for bed. Typically, I’ll read for a little bit before falling asleep.
The evening is short, but a good evening routine sets us up better for a good start to the morning. At least usually.

A Summer Afternoon on our Farmstead

If you’ve ever been on a farm, you know there is no siesta time in the summer. There should be though. After lunch play time happens for the kids. Usually back outside, we basically live out there in the summer. I work a bit more in the gardens, usually harvesting, or on a project as able in the heat.
Mid afternoon is nap time! The most glorious time of the day for momma. The baby for sure goes down for a nap. The middle child sometimes. It is heavenly if they all take a nap at the same time. I can power out computer work, or the jobs I cannot safely do with them, while they nap.
On the supper hot days, I will often load the kids up and run errands. Paying bills, going to the feed store, getting groceries, parts run, anything to stay where it’s cool for a while.
After naps, play in the yard continues. Usually, water is involved somehow. I water the flowers around the house, clean out the dogs’ pool and the water table, then refill them. If the big kids want in the pool, I find something I can do pool side. Snaping beans, washing veggies, braiding garlic, etc. Occasionally I’ll even grab a book and read it.
During the high heat days 95+ feel days, I walk down to the barns and check the animals, making sure no one is overheating, everyone still has cold water. Sometimes I’ll mist the pens or add ice to waters or hose the horses off. Most of the chickens are under the trees where there is shade and a bit of breeze. The water birds are having the time of their life in the water then to the shade and back again.
Afternoon chores involve picking up all the eggs, maybe going on an egg hunt. Refilling waters and double-checking feeders. I set alarms on my phone to remind me when it is chore time and when it is time to go start supper. Otherwise, I get busy working on something and soon its dark and everyone is hangry.
Afternoons tend to be much more laid back and variable than our mornings. Mostly because I have designed it that way. I stack our daily activities in the morning, giving us the freedom to do whatever is needed in the afternoon.
As I've grown in my journey as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So I MADE MY OWN. You can take a look at it on the link blow and buy it on amazon below

Mornings on our farmstead can be peaceful, but are often crazy, especially in the summertime. I’d like to say I, momma, rise with the sun ready to take on the day. I slip out to enjoy a walk around the gardens, picking a few things for breakfast and watch the sun rise with a lovely cup of coffee, before returning to accomplish a few work things before the kids rise. Then calmly care for the critters after breakfast.
Truth is that hasn’t happened in well over a year now. The baby from last year is almost 1 now. That pregnancy forced me to slow down and change things, sleeping in was one way I handled things. The longer the kids slept the shorter the time I had to remind, argue, and console without picking the older two up. I couldn’t physically do a lot and the longer I slept the less time I had to fill in the day and find ways to distract myself from what I wanted to do.
Postpartum happened, then I got really sick. Like spend 9 days in the hospital sick. My body wasn’t in great shape anyway it that wrecked what was left of it. Winter, I limped along trying to get back into me and heal my body. Still allowing sleeping in and ignoring my own alarm. Can you see the pattern yet? Overwhelm, anxiety, depression?
I’m slowly getting better now, but mornings are still a struggle for us. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to rise with the sun again like I used to. But for now, I’m learning grace in the journey.
Here’s what our morning’s really look like. I snooze the alarm several times, if I hear it at all, finally crawling out of bed when the baby insists I get up, because she is ready to play and have a clean diaper. The big kids are up shortly after, while I finish waking up in the bathroom, checking emails and notifications. I quickly make breakfast while trying to usher kids through the bathroom and convince the middle child clothes are required. Usually also sending messages.
Breakfast we also listen to a devotional, well half listen anyway, while reminding the kids to eat or they will be hangry later and pulling the baby off the table and pinning her plate to the table. Hurriedly I rush kids to finish eating so we can go outside and feed animals before it gets too hot. Goal is 8:30 its usually closer to 9:30 or 10.
Now rushing to feed and water all the animals. Checking to make sure everyone is ok. It’s already hot and I haven’t even checked any of the gardens yet. Check my planner, what area was I supposed to work in today? Ok head to the garden and quickly weed, check moisture, harvest what needs picked. The kids are running around playing with the dogs or baking in their mud kitchen.
Pretty soon my phone is going off reminding me to go make lunch. I snooze or dismiss and do just one more quick thing before heading into make lunch and eat. Its now 1pm.
Seriously, mornings go so much better when I just get up and have the time to start my day right with a little God time, work before breakfast, instead of while making it. Prep food for the day before kids, then we can enjoy the slower pace doing chores and the kids help more because I’m running at their pace not the rushed pace.
As I've grown in my journey as an entrepreneur, mom, gardener, and livestock owner, I struggled to find a planner that met my needs and kept me organized. So I MADE MY OWN. You can take a look at it on the link blow and buy it on amazon below

Kids on a farm or homestead are a big thing to worry about. Many of the day-to-day tasks can be dangerous for kids. So, what do you do with them when you, the adult, are out caring for the animals or tending the gardens? Usually, they are right there with me. The older kids, walking age and up, are helping or playing nearby. The baby is on a blanket, in the stroller, or pack in play. As they become mobile, they enjoy playing close to me as well.
It's never too early to start teaching your child how important it is for them not only listen, but also obey. Our kids have been taught from a very young age that there are times when if they don’t do what you say right away then bad things might happen and this leads into our next point: helping around the farm with work or animals as well as gardening in order teach responsibility.
Are they forced to help? All day no. But they are expected to help with some of the chores. Simple chores like filling waters and collecting eggs are easy ways for them to help and lighten my chore load a bit. Once chores are done, they can play in the area I am working in.
Boundaries have been set up, and firmly enforced, as to where they are allowed to be. As they have gotten older and more aware of the dangers, they have been allowed a greater area. They breach the boundary; they must stay by my side.
The kids love being able to help out in the garden and with animals. I find a job they can do that is simple, like holding tools for me while I work or pulling weeds alongside their mama! Both older children are expert weeders too - at 3 & 5 years old we've found these tasks perfect for them because it is easy to learn, get one on one time with mom, and they can leave easily when they are ready to play.
It takes time and training, but it is well worth it when they enjoy helping you. Tagging along and being included in your life. In summary, train your children young to listen and obey. Give them age-appropriate specific tasks to help you out. Set specific boundaries for where kids can safely play in the area you are working.

The year was 2019, I was pregnant with my second and enjoying my office job. As we prepared and began to look at daycare costs and availability, we realized at my current pay, it was going to be extremely difficult for us to buy the groceries and still fill the gas tank for me to get to work (70 miles round trip). That left the option of how do we pay the bills if I stayed home?
I carried the insurance, so we had to insurance shop. We were able to find a ministry to join in sharing medical costs. If you want to hear more on that, message me and I can tell you more. Next we went through and totaled up of any extra subscriptions, Netflix, Amazon Prime, ect. If it wasn’t necessary for our home function, it was included on the list.
We got to know our finances very well. Where were we spending our money every month? Track all the expenses for a few months and see. Then evaluate where you can trim.
The biggest problem we needed to solve was food. Groceries were one of our biggest expenses. In the past, I had a hobby garden in the summer, why not try and grow most of our own food? So that year I focused on growing what I knew we ate and grew it well. I also sold excess at the farmers market in town. Those months of market, I was able to feed my family from the garden and buy what we needed from the market sales. The following year, and every year since, I expanded to include more of what my family ate and enough to preserve for winter consumption.
Your steps to providing for your family may look different. Your basic steps are:
- Evaluate your income and expenses. Where is your money coming from? Where is it going?
- What can you get rid of monthly expense wise? Subscriptions?
- Are there less expensive options for your fixed monthly expenses (Insurance, etc)? Shop around!
- Where can you offset flexible costs? Can you DIY some things? Grow your own food?
- Are there some part time side hustles you can do to bring in a little income?
Everyone is different. My answer came from the dirt and growing my own food.

How do you respectfully raise animals knowing you will harvest them for food? The animal lover in me has asked this question time after time. It came to surface again this week as we harvested our beloved Turkey named Tom. And will surface again in a month I’m sure when we harvest the chickens I purchased for meat.
The truth is, it’s a hard balance. I actually shut down and out for a while, bracing and guarding myself from getting attached. But what happened is I detached from everyone, my horses, the dogs, and even put up guards around my people relationships. I wish I had a solid answer as to what turned things around again, but I really don’t.
It has been months of prayer, intentionally taking the time to spend with animals again, and lots of late nights in the barn with the lambs that started my animal addiction. It didn’t happen overnight, but I have slowly broken down the walls again and opened up.
I still don’t get to close to the animals I know will be harvested in a short time. But that doesn’t stop me from caring for them and giving them the best life I can while they are here.
Truth is everyone dies eventually. Some animals are born to die to feed the rest of the food chain. Take humans out of it and animals would still die to give life and nutrition to others. So I’m going to keep raising them with love and respect. And when it’s time for them to fulfill their purpose and give their nutrients to another, I’m going to make it as quick and painless as possible.
Until next time, I’ll still be Feeding Kids and Critters. ❤️
