A Summer Morning on our Farmstead

Mornings on our farmstead can be peaceful, but are often crazy, especially in the summertime. I’d like to say I, momma, rise with the sun ready to take on the day. I slip out to enjoy a walk around the gardens, picking a few things for breakfast and watch the sun rise with a lovely cup of coffee, before returning to accomplish a few work things before the kids rise. Then calmly care for the critters after breakfast. 
 
Truth is that hasn’t happened in well over a year now. The baby from last year is almost 1 now. That pregnancy forced me to slow down and change things, sleeping in was one way I handled things. The longer the kids slept the shorter the time I had to remind, argue, and console without picking the older two up. I couldn’t physically do a lot and the longer I slept the less time I had to fill in the day and find ways to distract myself from what I wanted to do. 
 
Postpartum happened, then I got really sick. Like spend 9 days in the hospital sick. My body wasn’t in great shape anyway it that wrecked what was left of it. Winter, I limped along trying to get back into me and heal my body. Still allowing sleeping in and ignoring my own alarm. Can you see the pattern yet? Overwhelm, anxiety, depression? 
 
I’m slowly getting better now, but mornings are still a struggle for us. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to rise with the sun again like I used to. But for now, I’m learning grace in the journey. 
 
Here’s what our morning’s really look like. I snooze the alarm several times, if I hear it at all, finally crawling out of bed when the baby insists I get up, because she is ready to play and have a clean diaper. The big kids are up shortly after, while I finish waking up in the bathroom, checking emails and notifications. I quickly make breakfast while trying to usher kids through the bathroom and convince the middle child clothes are required. Usually also sending messages. 
 
Breakfast we also listen to a devotional, well half listen anyway, while reminding the kids to eat or they will be hangry later and pulling the baby off the table and pinning her plate to the table. Hurriedly I rush kids to finish eating so we can go outside and feed animals before it gets too hot. Goal is 8:30 its usually closer to 9:30 or 10. 
 
Now rushing to feed and water all the animals. Checking to make sure everyone is ok. It’s already hot and I haven’t even checked any of the gardens yet. Check my planner, what area was I supposed to work in today? Ok head to the garden and quickly weed, check moisture, harvest what needs picked. The kids are running around playing with the dogs or baking in their mud kitchen. 
 
Pretty soon my phone is going off reminding me to go make lunch. I snooze or dismiss and do just one more quick thing before heading into make lunch and eat. Its now 1pm. 
 
Seriously, mornings go so much better when I just get up and have the time to start my day right with a little God time, work before breakfast, instead of while making it. Prep food for the day before kids, then we can enjoy the slower pace doing chores and the kids help more because I’m running at their pace not the rushed pace.

What do you Do with Kids While Doing Chores or Gardening?

Kids on a farm or homestead are a big thing to worry about. Many of the day-to-day tasks can be dangerous for kids. So, what do you do with them when you, the adult, are out caring for the animals or tending the gardens? Usually, they are right there with me. The older kids, walking age and up, are helping or playing nearby. The baby is on a blanket, in the stroller, or pack in play. As they become mobile, they enjoy playing close to me as well. 
 
It's never too early to start teaching your child how important it is for them not only listen, but also obey. Our kids have been taught from a very young age that there are times when if they don’t do what you say right away then bad things might happen and this leads into our next point: helping around the farm with work or animals as well as gardening in order teach responsibility. 
 
Are they forced to help? All day no. But they are expected to help with some of the chores. Simple chores like filling waters and collecting eggs are easy ways for them to help and lighten my chore load a bit. Once chores are done, they can play in the area I am working in. 
 
Boundaries have been set up, and firmly enforced, as to where they are allowed to be. As they have gotten older and more aware of the dangers, they have been allowed a greater area. They breach the boundary; they must stay by my side. 
 
The kids love being able to help out in the garden and with animals. I find a job they can do that is simple, like holding tools for me while I work or pulling weeds alongside their mama! Both older children are expert weeders too - at 3 & 5 years old we've found these tasks perfect for them because it is easy to learn, get one on one time with mom, and they can leave easily when they are ready to play.
 
It takes time and training, but it is well worth it when they enjoy helping you. Tagging along and being included in your life. In summary, train your children young to listen and obey. Give them age-appropriate specific tasks to help you out. Set specific boundaries for where kids can safely play in the area you are working.

How do I feed my family on half the income?

The year was 2019, I was pregnant with my second and enjoying my office job. As we prepared and began to look at daycare costs and availability, we realized at my current pay, it was going to be extremely difficult for us to buy the groceries and still fill the gas tank for me to get to work (70 miles round trip). That left the option of how do we pay the bills if I stayed home?
 
I carried the insurance, so we had to insurance shop. We were able to find a ministry to join in sharing medical costs. If you want to hear more on that, message me and I can tell you more. Next we went through and totaled up of any extra subscriptions, Netflix, Amazon Prime, ect. If it wasn’t necessary for our home function, it was included on the list. 
 
We got to know our finances very well. Where were we spending our money every month? Track all the expenses for a few months and see. Then evaluate where you can trim. 
 
The biggest problem we needed to solve was food. Groceries were one of our biggest expenses. In the past, I had a hobby garden in the summer, why not try and grow most of our own food? So that year I focused on growing what I knew we ate and grew it well. I also sold excess at the farmers market in town. Those months of market, I was able to feed my family from the garden and buy what we needed from the market sales. The following year, and every year since, I expanded to include more of what my family ate and enough to preserve for winter consumption. 
 
Your steps to providing for your family may look different. Your basic steps are:
  1. Evaluate your income and expenses. Where is your money coming from? Where is it going? 
  2. What can you get rid of monthly expense wise? Subscriptions?
  3. Are there less expensive options for your fixed monthly expenses (Insurance, etc)? Shop around!
  4. Where can you offset flexible costs? Can you DIY some things? Grow your own food? 
  5. Are there some part time side hustles you can do to bring in a little income?
 
Everyone is different. My answer came from the dirt and growing my own food.

What does a toxin free life look like?

Last week I talked about what changes when you to go a toxin free lifestyle. You can read that here. This week I am going to focus on what exactly that looks like in day to day life.
 
The day to day really doesn’t have to look much different than what it did before. The difference comes in the products you buy and the things you choose to bring into your home. When you shop you will become an expert label reader on all products.
 
When shopping for personal care products or home cleaning supplies, you avoid things with fragrance or SLS or other words you are unfamiliar with. You can get more information on specific ingredients to avoid here.
 
You will begin to care about where your food comes from. Some rice actually contain heavy medals from past growing practices. The boxed processed foods you used to buy you find are full of dyes and fillers. Empty calories that fill you up, but don’t feed your body. You realize fresh is truly best for your system and try and grow what food you can.
 
You begin to avoid anything synthetic. Including dyes, plastics, polyester, etc. You start to do things the old fashioned way. Making your own, going without, or finding alternatives. Glass is king in your home for storage.
 
You learn how best to support your body from the inside out. With real nutrition. You build your family up and give them what they need to thrive, instead of fighting. You learn how to help the body eliminate the toxins you were exposed to.
 
Truth is without completely isolating yourself from the modern world, toxins are unavoidable. But minimizing the day to day exposure will help your body detox the exposures. How far you choose to go on the toxin free lifestyle is completely up to you.

How does life change when you go toxin free?

Toxin free is all the hype now, but what does life toxin free actually look like? What changes in your life when you go toxin free? Making the change to toxin free living is a process, but the benefits are well worth it. Read to the end to find my personal experience. 
 
First, let’s look at why you should switch to toxin free living. In the United States, the F D A has an assume safe until proven different approach to product safety. Europe on the other hand, has a prove safe before approve philosophy. In Europe, more than 1,300 chemicals are banned from use in lotions, soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other personal care products. In the United States? Only 11 are banned. The average woman in the US will use 12 personal care products and/or cosmetics a day, containing 168 different chemicals, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Shocking isn’t it.
 
What is the big deal? What harm are they really doing to my body anyway? Many of these chemicals are endocrine disruptors, meaning they mimic hormones in the body, but the body can’t get rid of them. This throws your natural hormone balance off. Why is this such an issue? Your entire body is regulated by different hormonal signals. So, your body is trying to detox the added chemicals, and rebalance itself. Basically, the extra chemicals, they overload the work on your body, and it breaks down faster, and recovers slower.  
 
So where are these chemicals hiding? In your soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, make-up, face wash, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, softeners, air fresheners, candles, cleaners, and more. 
 
Convinced yet? Let me tell you something a little more personal. I didn’t think they were affecting me either, until I started switching. It started because of a little baby, and I wanted to be using cleaners that were safe for her. Then I switched my soaps, when I read how bad those were. Then my lotion, ditched my candles and perfumes. The results? Those periods I had that would leave me doubled over, in bed, moody, feeling bloated, and gross. They were GONE. I began to have cycles that weren’t painful
 
Now all products in our home are toxin free and natural. I don’t worry about the kids getting into the cleaning supplies (let’s be honest, there’s only one anyway), and they often clean up messes themselves. Would I go back to the store-bought stuff? NO WAY. The improvement in my cycle was enough to convince me to never go back. The improvement in my family health and recovery time is bonus. Products come to my door too!

How do you make it to all the Holiday dinners?

How do you do the holidays with multiple family gatherings and kids?!? The question comes up a lot especially this time of year. It is one of those things you must figure out once married. How do you see everyone and still maintain sanity? Before kids it is easier to drive to the multiple holiday dinners and see everyone, at least make an appearance for a few hours at each. 

 

I have never been a fan of that though. Maybe because growing up my grandparents were divided by 8 hours and that simply wasn’t an option. I love visiting and spending all day with the family gathered. I get to talk with family I only see a few times a year, because so much physical distance separates us. 

 

Shortly after I was married, my grandparents that lived in Colorado moved to Nebraska. I settled down about 30 minutes from my parents and farmed with my husband’s family. That left 3 out of 4 sets of grandparents within 30 minutes of us. We could totally do the holiday circus run but chose not to. Instead, we rotate. 

 

Since both my grandparents live so close to my parents, and many of the extended family doesn’t come back on Thanksgiving or Christmas, often the holiday is celebrated together. We choose to visit the side furthest away (3 hours), even though both grandparents have now died, over Thanksgiving every year. Since this is an overnight trip, we go when the weather is usually nice and little chance of snow, to leave the farm. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is then rotated between my parents and my husbands. Usually, we switch every year where we spend which day, but sometimes that changes depending on when family will be back. 

 

Is this set-in stone? No. It is the general outline with flexibility for when extend family gets together. For example, this year my mom’s side is all getting together the Saturday after Thanksgiving, to celebrate my grandparent’s anniversary. Will we be there? Yes! Will we still make our normal Thanksgiving trip? Yes, we just won’t stay until Saturday!

 

The point is we don’t drive ourselves crazy trying to get to everyone’s dinner. Every dinner gets an entire day, to gather, to catch up, and make memories.

How to meal prep for busy seasons in 4 easy steps

We all have busy seasons in our life. Sometimes we can know the seasons are coming up and plan accordingly. For us every fall is busier, as it is harvest time which means late nights, early-morning‘s, and many meals in the field. This fall is looking to be even busier as we prepare to welcome another child into our family.

So how do you prepare to feed your family healthy meals when you know you’re going to be busy or unable to cook? Short answer, you meal plan and prepare meals in advance that can be thrown into the oven or crock pot easily. How do you do that?
First start months in advance. It is recommended that freezer meals are good in the freezer for up to three months. So start three months ahead. 

Second, open your cookbooks and start listing the recipes that you could easily freeze. And most casseroles can easily be frozen for later use. Crock pot meals are easy to throw together in a freezer bag then dump in the crock-pot when ready too. 

Now that you have your list as you plan your meals over the next few months simply put 1 to 2 a week from your list on your menu. When you go to make them for your family that week, simply double the recipe. One you will put in a pan to make that night, the other you will put it in a freezer pan.  I like to use the disposable 9X13 pans for our family freezer meals. 

Once the meal in the freezer pan has cooled, wrap it in  plastic, followed by foil. Label with the meal, how long to cook it, at what temperature, and when it was made. Please note if it is frozen it will take about twice as long to cook compared to if it was thawed. 

I like to make a list of my freezer meals so I don’t have to dig through the freezer as much to find the meal I’m looking for. And then we can cross off once we’ve eaten it, keeping track of what is left easier.

How do you provide the best for your family

Part of being a parent, whether that is mom or dad, is providing for your family. When kids are involved, the momma bear mentality tends to come out. Why? Because mom’s innately want what is best for their kids. They have the natural drive to protect their kids. That drive to provide the best for their kids, motivates many of their decisions. 

How does that look in our house? I am constantly researching, looking into products to make sure they are actually safe for my kids. Is that bath soap non toxic or is it potentially harming my baby? Is the food I am introducing building their body up, or causing damage to their gut? Many of these research dives have been set off by a question from a friend, an article I read, or a challenge we’ve come up against. 

I have learned to dig into a product before I buy, because the last thing I want is my kids exposed to more toxins in our home. I have hormonal challenges, I want to avoid those challenges for my kids by not flooding their body with products that disrupt their hormones. 

I have learned to carefully select foods that build their guts up, after my son was challenged with food allergies. I have learned the importance of gut health and caring for the gut first to prevent illness and disease. I have learned how I store my food can contaminate it and decrease its nutritional value. 

The regulatory agencies and big companies don’t necessarily have our health in mind when they market products. As a consumer, you have to dig in an analyze ingredients of products, then make the decision if that product is actually safe. Fun fact, In Europe, more than 1,300 chemicals are banned from use in lotions, soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other personal care products. Contrast that to in the United States where just 11 are banned.  Why the difference! Because the regulatory agencies function on different principles.

Using fear for opportunity

What is a fear you carry deep inside? One that not many may know about, but affects many of your everyday decisions? Me? That somehow there won’t be enough, and my family will be left short. 

 

Why does this affect my decisions? Because the last thing I want is for my family to be short somehow. Short of food, finances, or simply time. 

 

So what do I do? First, I try to not let the fear overtake me. I acknowledge that it is there, and then remind myself of all the ways God has continued to provide for us in the past. My heart calms, and I can clearly think towards my next step. I then thank God for His provision and ask that He continue to remind me when that fear comes up again. 

 

This fear has also been a motivator for me. When I started staying home, our income was drastically cut. While we would no longer be paying for daycare or as much in gas, we now had to pay our own insurance and the grocery bill would be increasing. How were we going to offset the cost?

 

I looked around. We already lived on an acreage. I had gardened some in the past, and was getting pretty good at it. Why not take it to the next level and have the garden provide as much of our food as we could! 

 

And so it began, in more earnest. I planted more of what I knew we would consume and less of the extra stuff. I learned how to preserve our food supply for the winter. I also started learning how to grow more of the vegetables my family liked, so we weren’t buying as much at the store. 

 

The garden is still expanding and growing. I use the winter to learn more about the next vegetable or fruit I want to grow. I take notes and perfect the methods for our farm. I’m playing with double cropping and starting a permaculture orchard now. 

 

What started as a fear of not being able to buy enough groceries, has turned into a huge garden with the potential to meet 80% (currently around 50%) of our family’s veggie and fruit needs when it is all mature. All this from not giving into the fear, but stepping back and looking for the opportunity in the fear.

What makes old horses so valuable?

There is something about old horses that is just too good. Maybe it is that they have seen most things and are unfazed by the noise and commotion of life. Or maybe that they have earned their living and are now peacefully enjoying retirement. But what makes them such great horses?!?

 

Old horses have usually had at least one carrier before they are considered too old and retire, but their life doesn’t stop there. They may have been a ranch horse working long days, or a rodeo horse used to all the noise. Maybe a professional show horse used to hauling and the arena. Maybe they were just the family trail horse who has seen more miles than could be counted. 

 

It is an old horse's past experiences and work that make them so good, especially for beginner riders. They know most of what is up and will take care of their rider as the rider learns. This is the trait that makes them invaluable. 

 

We’ve had two early 20s horses with our family for quite some time. The one showed his age very early. Hank, being an old ranch horse, not much physed him. My husband used him for a few years working and moving cattle, but his age caught up, and he could no longer keep up with cows that broke away. He retired to being the kids' horse. They are merely beginning to ride, but he would pack them along on the ride like it was nothing. You had better believe it was hard to say good-bye this summer when the time came.

 

The other has had a much easier work life. He has always been a family horse and mainly just trail rode. When I bought Mojo almost 10 years ago he already had a laid back personality, but what not the best trained. I worked with him and found that he wasn’t just laid back, but smart enough to play dumb to get out of work! I literally threw everything I could think of at him that might scare him and he quickly came to expect the weird and out of normal. Why did I do that? Because my vision for him was to be a therapy horse and I needed him bomb proof. He was the beloved mount for many special needs riders while I was teaching lessons. Now he’s my children's favorite. 

 

See older horses may be set in their ways, but when they have good ground manners and experience, they are the perfect teacher for a novice rider.
